History and Facts

Latinas Contra Cancer (LCC) was born out of the necessity to increase cancer awareness and decrease mortality in the Latino community. The Agency is based in San Jose, CA in the Silicon Valley where almost a third of the population of the County is Latino. It was founded in September of 2003, incorporated in the State of California in 2004 and is a non-profit agency which received its 501c(3) in February 2005.LCC was founded by Ysabel Duron, a San Francisco newscaster and cancer survivor.

Clients Services

  • 3 monthly support groups for cancer patients/and their families
  • 1 monthly support group for parents with children with cancer
  • 138 patients/and/or family members served in 2011 by patient navigator in the cancer center
  • Telecounseling or home and hospital visits
  • 200 participants in education workshops about cancer
  • Several hundred bras, wigs, prosthesis on-site or through 5 other Bay Area agencies

  • Launched Nov 2003

Annual Walk Against Cancer
Mother’s Day Walk Against Cancer, Many Small Steps Making a Big Difference

  • 7 Cancer Walks raising awareness about breast, prostate, lung, colorectal and pediatric cancer
  • 2200 mostly Latino walkers
  • $175 thousand raised (Net)

Breast Health Bingo/Signature Education Program

  • Launched beta testing in 5 cities in 2004
  • 1000 participants in 5 years
  • Participant calls breast health bingo "sugar coated medicine."
  • 2006 Chevron provides $50K grant to pilot BHB in 4 California cities as well as Houston, TX and Orlando, FL

  • Latino Men's Cancer Health Initiative-modeled on our bingo model approach to raise awareness about prostate, colorectal and lung cancer-2007
  • Healthy Eating, Healthy Living, Healthy Environment Campaign-workshops and healthy cooking classes in Spanish using Latino recipes to diminish cancer risk with a spotlight on colorectal screening -2011
