The Sister Study

The Sister Study is one of the first long-term studies to help us understand how women's genes and the things in their environment — homes, workplaces, and communities — influence risk of breast cancer. It is the first to collect such extensive and detailed information about environmental exposures. Clinical trails involve sisters of women with breast cancer.

Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers

Hispanic Breast Cancer Awareness Project

Increase the number of Hispanic (esp. Non-English speaking) women who receive screening/diagnostic mammography and clinical breast exams. Conduct community outreach activities to Hispanic women about the importance of BSE and regular mammography. Women identified through the project who have breast cancer would be guaranteed treatment and follow-up services through cooperative efforts of SSCHC providers, MBCAP, and area hospitals. Outreach workers follow-up with the women and provide education to groups and in the home of families and community setting.

The overall goal of this outreach program is to bring breast health education directly into the Hispanic community in Waukesha County, and thereby increase the number of women receiving early detection breast cancer screening services. The primary means of providing breast health education and achieving program goals will be through one-on-one home visits, small group education sessions in homes, YMCA of Waukesha, work sites, churches, community center, library, etc., Spanish materials, program fliers with eligibility guidelines for the CDC screening program.

This program is an outreach program for Hispanic women in Waukesha County. The women will be educated in breast health and will be offered mammography screening through the Well Woman Program. "Su Salud" Breast Cancer Outreach Program

This is a program to target at-risk, hard-to-reach Hispanic women who, due to cultural, language, financial and other barriers, lack information regarding risk education and detection of breast cancer and how to seek appropriate care. A breast health care nurse and a lay health educator/cultural companion will present culturally relevant breast health inform information sessions through small group gatherings.
