Last year, we launched our first Latina Patient Power: Rights to Heal Retreat, and it was an inspiring beginning. This year, we did it again! In July, we hosted our Second Annual Rights to Heal: Patient Organizing and Power-Building Retreat, bringing together nearly 50 Latina patients, community leaders, and cancer survivors.
Over the weekend, participants immersed themselves in the core of organizing: Mutual Aid, Base Building, and Launching Power Campaigns. They strengthened their networks, built trust, and learned concrete strategies to drive change in their communities. By practicing mutual aid and reinforcing the networks that connect us, they laid the foundation for collective power and long-term impact.
The retreat also created a space for self-care and reflection. Participants indulged in delicious meals, enjoyed the beauty of nature, and participated in restorative sessions like sound healing and guided meditation, reminding us that caring for ourselves is part of building sustainable community power.
This retreat was more than just a gathering—it was a space to envision the healthcare system we want to see: one where justice is achievable for everyone, and where patients and communities have the power to shape the policies and programs that affect their lives. The work ahead is ambitious, but together, we are ready to organize, build power, and create meaningful change.
We are deeply grateful to our funders, partners, participants, and staff for making this retreat possible. The energy, ideas, solidarity, and rejuvenation cultivated over the weekend remind us why this work matters—and we cannot wait to continue building the world we know is possible, together.
